[Jazz Piano] Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (sheet music)

In order to play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star with both hands on the piano, you will need to take your time and not rush. We recommend that you take short sequences of the song and play slowly with both hands. When your playing becomes fluid, accelerate slightly to the original speed of the piece. Once the first sequence is mastered, move on to the next and repeat the same exercise. Finally, when this last one is also played with ease, link the two parts, etc.

The Notes Of The Right Hand

Once you have identified the first C note of the music, we will play the whole melody with the right hand. To do this, you need to press the following notes one after the other:

C C G G A A G F F E E D D C G G F F E E D G G F F E E D C G G A G F F E E D C.

This sequence of notes correspond to the entire Twinkle Twinkle Little Star piano song, played with the right hand only. If you press all these notes one after the other, you will easily recognize the melody of the famous song.

Different Approaches To Chords

What’s the easiest way for beginners to start with chords?

Probably just a single note in the left hand. I tell students this is like playing a bass guitar part. Using the sheet with chord symbols, I have them use their “pointer” finger – left hand! – to play each chord symbol key.

C – F – C – F – C – G7 – C…

Yikes – what about G7? Tell them it is the same as G, for now.

Starting with a triad C chord is always an easy way to begin with the left hand… if you have started your pianists with easy chord inversions, this left hand accompaniment will be a snap for them!

A “little F” chord just requires the thumb to stretch to an “a”, and the G7 chord can be a “pinch” – “g” and “f” side-by-side.

Lesson : Twinkle Twinkle Little Star In C F & G

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star uses six of the seven notes in a scale, making it a nice piece for learning notes and becoming familiar with anyparticular key. Learn and memorize it in C, F, and G, hands separatelyand hands together. Then, in the key of C, try learning it with chords and Alberti Bass, as it provides a perfect exercise as preparation for higher level piano skills.

This is a great piece for very young pianostudents because they know it, and they get to use all five fingers with simple step-wise motion.

Instructions for learning a piece on the piano:

-play each line with right hand until it is easy and/or memorized.

-play each line with left hand until it is easy and/or memorized.

-play each line with both hands until it is easy and/or memorized.

-stringthe lines together until you can play the whole piece. Keep it slowuntil you are comfortable and familiar with it. Then, start playing itfaster, working up to an appropriate tempo for that piece.

-Regardless of tempo, relax your arms & shoulders and keep it smooth and flowing.

In spite of the fingering I have placed in the music – the five to four and four to five – your student is most likely to COMPLETELY IGNORE those helpful suggestions and just play “1 – 1 – 5 – 5 – 5 – 5 – 5…” or something like that!

Is Finger Replacement Necessary In Twinkle

In their method books, they may not encounter this skill for a while, but in this song, it is easy to understand and imitate, if you take them through the process every week until they GET IT.

But… it depends on you and what you think is most beneficial at this stage of your student’s learning. Perhaps just reading the notes and adding left hand chords in the coming weeks will be accomplishment enough!

Finger replacement is actually a difficult and advanced technique, though eventually we hope that it will become second nature to our piano students.

Difficulty : The Dissociation Of The Two Hands

    Twinkle Little Star Piano

The dissociation of the hands is a basic piano technique that allows you to play two different melodies at the same time with your both hands.

Its difficult to do when you are a beginner because your brain is not used to this type of exercise. It needs practice and repetition in order to develop this faculty.

This is why we have divided this tutorial into 3 distinct sections: first learning the right hand , then learning the left hand , and finally both simultaneously.

If you are just beginning to play the piano, this work will necessarily take time. You will need to practice a bit before you can play both hands with ease.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Piano Music

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is one of the best loved nursery rhymes and is well known throughout many countries. It is a great piece to learn to play on the piano.

I have put together 2 different arrangements for you to have a go at:

    • An easy piano version of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
    • An intermediate version.

You can click on the image to open the PDF version of the sheet music.

The easy piano version is in the key of C major so you have no sharps or flats. The right hand plays the melody. The melody stretches the right hand out of its normal resting position on the piano as it goes up to an A in pitch. As a result, there is some tricky fingering when moving between the G and A notes of the melody. Take a bit of time to practice it with just the right hand until you can play the tune fluently.

The left hand is simple and plays the root note of each chord and the note length is a half note each time.
