    Different Approaches To Chords

What’s the easiest way for beginners to start with chords?

Probably just a single note in the left hand. I tell students this is like playing a bass guitar part. Using the sheet with chord symbols, I have them use their “pointer” finger – left hand! – to play each chord symbol key.

    C – F – C – F – C – G7 – C…

Yikes – what about G7? Tell them it is the same as G, for now.

Youre doing great! Once youre comfortable with the first line, lets move on to the second.

For the second line, we will be using keys C, D, E, and F. Just like it looks, D, E, and F are the first, second and third keys to the right of the C key.

Using your right hand again, move your fingers over these keys:

Our second line goes like this: FF, EE, DD, C.

Can you hear that? Now youre playing!

Practice this line a few times before moving onto the next, if youre comfortable try to play the first and second line together!

Difficulty : The Dissociation Of The Two Hands

The dissociation of the hands is a basic piano technique that allows you to play two different melodies at the same time with your both hands.

Its difficult to do when you are a beginner because your brain is not used to this type of exercise. It needs practice and repetition in order to develop this faculty.

This is why we have divided this tutorial into 3 distinct sections: first learning the right hand , then learning the left hand , and finally both simultaneously.

If you are just beginning to play the piano, this work will necessarily take time. You will need to practice a bit before you can play both hands with ease.

    • An easy piano version of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
    • An intermediate version.

You can click on the image to open the PDF version of the sheet music.

The easy piano version is in the key of C major so you have no sharps or flats. The right hand plays the melody. The melody stretches the right hand out of its normal resting position on the piano as it goes up to an A in pitch. As a result, there is some tricky fingering when moving between the G and A notes of the melody. Take a bit of time to practice it with just the right hand until you can play the tune fluently.

The left hand is simple and plays the root note of each chord and the note length is a half note each time.
