The easy piano version is in the key of C major so you have no sharps or flats. The right hand plays the melody. The melody stretches the right hand out of its normal resting position on the piano as it goes up to an A in pitch. As a result, there is some tricky fingering when moving between the G and A notes of the melody. Take a bit of time to practice it with just the right hand until you can play the tune fluently.

The left hand is simple and plays the root note of each chord and the note length is a half note each time.

Ah! is a well-known nursery rhyme. The first wordless translation of Vous Dirai-Je, Maman was used in 1761. Mozart created a series of improvisations based on this tune in the early 1960s, when he was just 25 or 26 years old. This tune can be found in many other Christmas carols, including those sung by Germans, Hungarians, Spaniards, and Turks. Mozart wrote a set of 12 variations on Ah!

Although historians are unable to determine when Mozart composed the French melody, he is likely to have composed it while in Paris in October 1778.
