Starting with a triad C chord is always an easy way to begin with the left hand… if you have started your pianists with easy chord inversions, this left hand accompaniment will be a snap for them!

A “little F” chord just requires the thumb to stretch to an “a”, and the G7 chord can be a “pinch” – “g” and “f” side-by-side.

See the version AFTER the one below, to see the chords spelled out in the bass staff.

The Notes Of The Left Hand

Once you have identified the E , you will have to play the whole sequence of notes following:

E E E F F E D D C C B B C E E D D C B E E D D C C G E E E E F G A B C D A G C G G C.

If you press all these notes one after the other, you are playing the entire left hand of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on the piano.

The left hand doesnt usually provide the melody in a song, but it does help accompany the right hand and add depth and nuance to your playing. Thats why its just as important as the right hand.

Its difficult to do when you are a beginner because your brain is not used to this type of exercise. It needs practice and repetition in order to develop this faculty.

This is why we have divided this tutorial into 3 distinct sections: first learning the right hand , then learning the left hand , and finally both simultaneously.

If you are just beginning to play the piano, this work will necessarily take time. You will need to practice a bit before you can play both hands with ease.

Walking Bass Line With Approach Tones

This bass line sounds fancy! What Kevin essentially does here is play a 1-6-2-5-3-6-2-5 progression. This is a very common turnaround pattern in jazz. The specific chords Kevin uses are:

Cmaj7 A7b9* Dm9** G13 Em7 A7 Dm9 G13

*A: Kevin plays this as a major chord with a flat 9

**Dm: Kevin plays this as a Dm9 but a normal Dm7 sounds good too

It sounds jazzy and more complex because Kevin uses approach tones. Approach tones are notes that proceed another note that is either a half or whole step away from your target note. For example, he uses Ab to approach A and Eb to approach D.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Piano Music

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is one of the best loved nursery rhymes and is well known throughout many countries. It is a great piece to learn to play on the piano.

I have put together 2 different arrangements for you to have a go at:

    • An easy piano version of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
    • An intermediate version.

You can click on the image to open the PDF version of the sheet music.

The easy piano version is in the key of C major so you have no sharps or flats. The right hand plays the melody. The melody stretches the right hand out of its normal resting position on the piano as it goes up to an A in pitch. As a result, there is some tricky fingering when moving between the G and A notes of the melody. Take a bit of time to practice it with just the right hand until you can play the tune fluently.

The left hand is simple and plays the root note of each chord and the note length is a half note each time.
