The Day Silent Night Hushed Up No Mans Land
An original German carol, Stille Nacht is one of the most frequently performed Christmas songs around the world. In essence, its a poem written by Pastor Franz Mohr in Austria . Mohr was on assignment at the time in a pilgrim church in his fathers hometown. He transferred to St. Nicholas Parish , and this church was flooded and the organ damaged. But in a few hours, it was going to be Christmas eve, so he brought his poem to German composer Franz Xaver Gruber and asked Gruber to set the poem to music so it could be played with guitar accompaniment during Christmas Eve service. Gruber delivered upon Mohrs request and at midnight, Silent Night, an upbeat pastorale, almost-dance carol, premiered at St. Nicholas Parish. It uplifted the spirits of the congregation after they experienced miserable flooding. Compared to the St. Nicholas Parish Christmas eve version which has a moderato tune and Sicilian rhythm, the carol which is popular these days is the slow, reverent ballad English translation published by Bishop John Freeman Young. Youngs translation in 1859 has only 3 of the original 6 verses of Mohr. But its popularity expanded across cultures and its popularity spread early on.

Silent Night is a German carol composed by Franz Gruber, with text by Josef Mohr that was written in 1816. The German title is Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht. Legend tells us that Silent Night was composed because the organ in Saint Nicholas Church in Obendorf, Austria was broken , and they needed a song with guitar accompaniment for the Christmas Eve service in 1818.
Gruber composed the beautiful melody to Silent Night, which was immediately well received. Legend also tells us that the organ tuner who came to repair the instrument was impressed with Silent Night and took a copy of it with him after fixing the churchâs instrument. Supposedly, he gave it to a vocal group which helped spread the melody through Austria. Regardless of the circumstances of its composition, Silent Night became one of the most beloved Christmas carols in the world. A Brief History Of Silent Night
Let us set the scene for you an Alpine town, Mariapfarr, in the Australian countryside, 1816. The town was in a state of disaster after twelve years of the Napoleanic wars and a year without summer caused by a volcanic eruption in Indonesia. There was political and social unrest, bitter cold, famine, and disease. With nowhere else to turn, a young Austrian priest, Joseph Mohr, writes a six-verse poem, hoping to restore the towns faith in Gods unconditional love and benevolence.
