A Little History Behind Reading Music Notes

Sheet music with notes is read from left to right. The reasoning behind this is that music began as an exercise most focused on the progression of notes in a scale or mode in a horizontal fashion. When more than one voice was sounded together, they usually sang in unison it was not until the 9th century that musicians became increasingly concerned with vertical harmony and polyphony.
Keyboard instruments, such as the organ, the harpsichord, and ultimately the piano, were instruments developed to satisfy this changing aesthetic and the increased importance of vertical harmonies. They were adapted into a notation that had been developed to address primarily horizontal concerns . This means beginner piano students must learn to think about the music on the page differently from the words on a page.

About Happy Birthday Or Happy Birthday To You
Happy Birthday, or Happy Birthday to You, was written 1893 by Patty Hill and Mildred J. Hill who were sisters and American kindergarten school teachers. The original version, Good Morning to All, was written as a song that would be easy for children to sing. Their students enjoyed the song so much that they would spontaneously begin singing it at birthday parties. Eventually the lyrics were changed to Happy Birthday. Happy Birthday to You, or Happy Birthday, is now considered to be the most recognized song in the English language according to the 1998 Guinness World Records.

Carol Of The Bells Piano Notes/key
I chose to arrange Carol of the Bells in the key of A minor. This makes it particularly easy for those who are new to piano, since A minor has no sharps or flats in it.
There will also be a few accidentals added into the arrangements .
The overall structure of the song is simple. It starts out with a repeated pattern in the right hand that continues for quite a few measures. . This pattern will eventually move up to higher notes, and then commense into some flowing melodies and scales.
With the easy version, I have tried to keep the left hand extremely simple too. It has single notes or intervals throughout the entire song, so you wont have to worry about moving around a bunch with both hands at the same time.
As you learn this song, dont forget to pay attention to dynamics as well! Ive included a few noted on the music, but here are some extra notes:
- The repeated pattern in the right hand should be softer than whatever the left and is doing. It is not the melody.
- When you start the section with intervals in the left hand, you can get slightly louder when the intervals go up, and then softer when they go back down.
- Measure 21 is the climax of the piece, so dont hesitate to get bold and loud in the right hand there!
- When you get to the very end, make sure to get softer and slow down, just like bells fading out into the distance.

One New Key At A Time
I used to assign kids the entire paper to fill in the first week, but gradually I’ve come to assign just one note name per week, and stipulate that at home, they are to strike every one of THOSE keys up and down the keyboard every day.
“This week, I want you to write in all the D’s, in pencil, and play every D, etc.”, so that we keep returning to the paper piano keyboard layout week after week.
It’s a BIG DEAL when we’ve gotten through all the white keys, and turn our attention to those mysterious black keys, with the double names…
Here is a student who has placed a little animal on each G# key.
Below are two very different piano keyboards diagrams: the first one has small keys , the second one is larger, with fewer keys.
Both print out nicely on 8 1/2″ by 11″ paper, with PLENTY of white space left below for you to write on! Scroll down for the free downloadable PDF links…
Save Ink By Laminating

If you choose to print out this particular piano learning guide for your students , I suggest laminating it, or using wide tape to cover the important parts of the page! INK IS SO EXPENSIVE, and we music teachers seem to need a lot of it.
You might also find it useful to laminate one of the online piano keyboards below, and allow your students to write on the keyboard with an erasable felt pen, to use the keyboard over and over.
