Now, that is not to say that smaller pianos dont exist.
From keyboards and MIDI controllers to digital stage pianos and synthesizers, other keyboard instruments often have a different number of keys.
Many stage pianos will have 73 keys. 73 keys give you a little over six and half octaves, which is enough to make most music.
Smaller, entry-level digital pianos sometimes have just 41 keys.
Synthesizers that are designed for bass playing or lead playing will sometimes have just 25 keys.
But, if you are buying any sort of acoustic piano you can expect the full 88.
Pianos With Additional Keys
Some piano makers are trying to push the boundaries of the pianos capabilities. An Australian piano manufacturer, Stuart, and Sons are making a super grand piano with 102 keys, including nine octaves.
There are more who make pianos with a large number of keys. The Imperial Bosendorfer is another piano manufacturer. They manufacture a piano with 97 keys, including eight octaves. All of the extra nine bass keys are colored black.
So, both beginner and intermediate players can distinguish them from the standard one. Pianos with extra keys are designed for professionals. They are longer and more substantial than the regular ones. So, it can impact the practicality of the piano.

The Evolution Of Piano Keys
The history of the piano is very long and involves many different people. The contemporary key and keyboard system we use was invented primarily by a man by the name of Bartolomeo Cristofori around the year 1700. He was an Italian harpsichord mechanic and musical instrument technician who invented a new keyboard instrument complete with a hammer and damper system, very much like todays pianos. At the time, he was employed by the Florentine court of Grand Prince Ferdinando de Medici. Their instrument registry lists an instrument called arpicimbalo or an instrument resembling a harpsichord. The instrument was described about a decade later by poet Scipione Maffei as gravicembalo col piano, e forte , which is the first usage of the original name, fortepiano or loud-soft.
Cristoforis fortepiano developed over the next century and by the mid-1800s had expanded to a 7 octave keyboard, big enough for the expressive range of emotions found in the music of Frederic Chopin and Franz Liszt. By 1880, piano manufacturer Steinway debuted the 88-key piano and their model has been the standard ever since.
The 88 key piano includes 7 octaves plus an additional 3 keys below the bottom C. The contemporary piano has 52 white keys and 36 black keys with one octave equal to 7 white keys and 5 black keys.
The Difference Between White Keys And Black Keys
In a piano, the distance between two keys denotes as semitones and whole tones . All 88 keys dont have the same distance between them. There is always one semitone distance between any white keys with its adjacent black key.
For instance, the black key between two white keys FA and SOL is called F# . So the distance between FA and F# or F# and SOL is a semitone. Thats because there is no other black key between FA and SOL.
It is different in the case of white keys. The distance between two white keys is a whole tone. For example, the distance between DO and RE is a whole tone, even if C# separates both.
The white keys are made up of natural notes. So it is easy for beginners to play. Conversely, the black keys are all in half-step intervals. These black keys are known as flats and sharps. Thats why a piano includes 12 notes pattern with seven white and five black keys.

It does not matter if you have a 37, 66 or full 88-key keyboard. What matters is that you know how many of each color there are in a piano for you to properly label them. The pattern followed by black keys is 2-3-2 where 2-3 are found in one octave. The last 2 in the 2-3-2 means that you have entered a new octave. Therefore, an 88-key keyboard would have 52 white keys and 36 black keys. Conversely, 37-key keyboards would have 22 white keys and 15 black keys, 49-key keyboards would have 20 black keys and 29 white keys, 54-key keyboards would have 27 black keys and 27 white keys and 61-key keyboards have 25 black keys and 26 white keys.

Buying Used Keyboards For Beginners
A used keyboard can give you a high-end instrument for less money, but as with all used purchases, let the buyer beware. Some used instruments are in good condition others have been cared for poorly. If you know an experienced musician, ask him or her to weigh in on whether a used keyboard is worth your investment. Check your potential purchase carefully, turning it on and making sure all keys and buttons work.

Lets Shed Some Light On The History
Lets take a short trip back to the 17th century and the era of Vivaldi, Handel, and Bach. That time, the modern piano did not exists. Instead, there were different types of keyboard instruments.
One of the most used among them was the harpsichord, which has only 60 keys. The musicians of that time were limited to a short range of five octaves only. With the progress of music, the piano arrived, which was made by Bartolomeo Cristofori.
He revamped the old harpsichord and created the pianoforte. That piano used to produce sounds by using a brand-new hammer mechanism. But, the newly created piano had only 49 keys or a range of four octaves.

Who Created The First 88

Bartolomeo Cristofori designed the first piano designed in 1720, and this type of piano was designed to not only sound different but have forty-four keys present on it.
As time went on, pianists started demanding an increased number of keys on the piano but designing a piano to have more keys presented manufacturers with a logical challenge.
