What If You Are Tone Deaf
Unfortunately, numerous individuals are tone-deaf, meaning they cant distinguish between sounds. However, just because you are not able to perceive tones now, doesnt mean you have to give up your dream to become a musician you can learn how to identify tones.
First, take the tone-deaf test to find out if you really are tone-deaf. This test was created by professional musician-educators with many years of experience in the music industry based on scientific research in tone-deafness. You might be surprised to find that you are not completely tone-deaf.
If you pass, great! However, even if you fail, youre still not out of the Ballpark, there are many online resources to help you learn how to distinguish and recognize tones Musical U is one of them. And dont forget there is still one thing that can help you to be a great musician even if you are tone-deaf and thats memory.
Playing by memory, put into another perspective, is a way that you can fake it until you learn to play by ear. Its what you can do when all else fails, but you should continue to work on recognizing tones while playing by memory.

Choosing The Right Instrument
You cant drive without a car and you cant play baseball without a bat and glove. In the same way, you cant play the piano without a keyboard. But what kind of keyboard will you choose? An acoustic piano or a digital one?
Acoustic pianos stand out as the traditional choice, whether upright or spinet, studio or grand. They offer real mechanical action, give you fuller control of the sound, and produce superior tone and timbre.
So when you press the keys, you can feel the small vibrations as the felt hammers strike the metal strings, you can hear the acoustic reverberations of the sound, and you can shape the sound with the pedals as a potter shapes wet clay.
Whats more, when you play a nocturne by Chopin, you know that you are playing the kind of instrument that Chopin himself once played, guaranteeing a more authentic and intimate experience, the kind of musical experience championed by acclaimed musicians like Josef Lhevinne and Andre Watts.
Even so, digital pianos offer exclusive benefits that acoustic pianos fail to provide. They are portable and slim, whereas acoustic pianos are obnoxiously heavy. Digital keyboards do not need tuning, which can be expensive, and are immune to fluctuations in humidity.
They feature volume controls and headphone jacks that equip you to practice in privacy without disturbing people around you.
Most Lesson Books Have Accompanying Video Material On The Internet

These days, most lesson books have accompanying material on the internet. Usually this includes videos of people playing songs from the book, or even full lessons that accompany the course material.
For most students, these visual accompaniments will be helpful.
Its always good to hear someone else play the song you are working on .

Finding And Choosing Music To Play
You can learn and enjoy yourself by playing music you make up and write, or make up and improvise on the spot. Sooner or later, you will want to find some sheet music or songbooks for more music. You can get music in music stores or online easily, but it may not be the music you want to try and play.
You need to find music that suits your level of play. The best way to do this is to just look at the music. If you are buying in a store, you can examine the books or sheet music thoroughly before you buy.
One thing you can look at is how many sharps or flats the songs in the songbook tend to have. A song that uses too many of the black keys is harder to play when you are first starting out. Also, for some reason, many people find the sharp key signatures more difficult to manage than the flat key signatures.
Look, too, at the difficulty of the chords. If the chords are clusters of many notes, you will know that the chords will not be as easy as simple triads. Take note of whether there are chords of four or five notes together on both left and right hands. You can learn these if you want to, but be prepared to work a little bit.
Look for difficult rhythms. You might see a lot of dotted notes or notes with different values mixed together to make up a measure. Again, you can take your time and learn these songs. You can clap out the rhythms until you have them down before you play. However, if you are looking for some quick success, look for more even and simple note values.
Bars And Tempo In Practice
As you already know, the time signature determines how many beats of a certain note value fit in a bar. Now you are ready to learn about the tempo, in other words how fast or how slow you should play. Listen to the audio sample.
Your browser doesn’t support HTML5 audio. Here is a link to the audio instead.
You can hear the tempo of the piece shown:
The tempo is expressed in beats per minute every click you hear represents one beat. It clicks once per second, i.e. the tempo of this song is 60 beats per minute or 60 BPM
The bar number 4/4 tells you that the length of each bar must be four quarter notes long. The tempo tells you how fast the quarter notes should be played in time. Listen to the sound sample:
Your browser doesn’t support HTML5 audio. Here is a link to the audio instead.
Exercise: Follow the click sound carefully each click corresponds to a quarter note. You can tap your thigh with every click sound with your hand, moving your eyes from one quarter note to the next to the end. Then you can start all over again.
Please repeat this exercise for at least 3 minutes to get a good feeling for the tempo of the beat.
Congratulations!
Do you know what you just did? You just learned to read notes and translate them into music. So far, you have only tapped the notes on your thighs, but soon you will play your first pieces on the piano!
Time to call your friends, parents or loved ones and tell them that you have learned to read music!

How We Tested Online Piano Lessons
Our testing process for online piano lessons started with evaluating how easily each product can be purchased, downloaded and installed. Once the software was downloaded on our testing computer, we looked for all available features and took note of how easy it was to switch between lessons and songs.
After we were comfortable navigating the software or app, we started taking beginner lessons. Although we did take note of the advanced features on each platform, we mostly approached the courses as if we were complete novices to the instrument. We also tested how easy it was to use a MIDI keyboard when the software allowed for that.

Get Your Timing Right
Every note has a count the length of time you should keep it pressed. In music sheets, youll find three most often used, which include the following:
- Whole notes
- Half notes
- Quarter notes
The white circles you see on a music sheet are whole notes. When you see these, it means you have to keep the note for four full beats .
Half notes are also white circles, with a stem attached to them. You hold these notes for two beats .
Quarter notes look much like half notes, except they have shaded circles. They represent one beat.
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star/the Alphabet Song
In case you havent already noticed, these two songs are basically the same but with more or fewer notes. Therefore, if you learn one, you will also know the other. I know these are little kids songs, but learning them helps you to know the basics, so, these are great songs to start you off on your musical journey. Get Your Own Piano Or Keyboard
You cant learn how to teach yourself piano if you dont have one! Even if theres a public place where you have access to a piano, its far better if you have one in the privacy of your home. That means its time to make an investment.
Acoustic pianos typically range in price from $2,000 to $10,000 or more for some high-quality concert grand pianos. Obviously, as a beginner, you dont need a grand piano, but youll at least want a quality instrument to practice on. Acoustic pianos are large and heavy, and require regular tuning to remain playable. Even though these aspects seem like downsides, nothing can truly replace the sound and feel of a real piano.
If the cost is an issue for you, however, a digital keyboard is a totally acceptable place to start. A full 88-key version starts at about $150. Remember, youll also need a keyboard stand, piano bench, and sustain pedal. The more features you want , the higher the investment will be. Most importantly, dont be tempted by inexpensive, low-quality keyboards. Insist on weighted keys, which is the key to achieving different dynamics in the music you play.
