A Brief History Of Piano Keys

Linkin Park – In The End – EASY Piano Tutorial by PlutaX

Historically keys can be traced back to little levers used on water organs before the collapse of Rome. Organs continued with variations of levers, some so heavy their players were called organ beaters. But organ keys found dating back to 226 A.D. were no heavier than modern keys. The lack of a lightness of touch was an issue in many instruments right up to the 1700s with Bach himself complaining of Gottfried Silbermanns iconic pianos.

Au Clair De La Lune Jean

Au clair de la lune is a popular French song composed by the musician Jean-Baptiste Lully in the 17th century.

This song has the characteristic of being the first recorded music in history in 1860.

Au clair de la lune is very easy to play on the piano. We show you the note numbers to play on your piano below.

How To Clean Piano Keys

Unless your piano is an antique with ivory keys, a little vinegar, water and a soft cloth are all you need to buff up dirty keys. Try not to use a colored cloth. Be careful not to drip water between the keys keep the moisture just damp on the cloth. And follow with a dry cloth to buff.

If you dont know what your keys are, plastic or ivory, the best method is to check the color and surface of the keys. Ivory keys usually have visible lines shaped like semi circles, which are the natural grains of the ivory. Plastic keys are uniformly white.

With ivory keys, know that they tend to yellow with age and that a typical cleaning will not restore them to white. Ivories should be cleaned with a soft cloth and a very mild solution of dishwashing detergent. It may be possible to whiten them placing them in the sun for a few hours. Before you go this route, be sure to speak with a piano technician who has experience with ivories. The main thing to remember is that piano keys should be cleaned regularly for health reasons. Little fingers are magnets for dirt and germs!

Piano Notes Numbers: Introduction And Explanation Of The Method

Lets introduce here the method with which we will learn to play the songs of this article. For each song, you will learn independently the notes of the right hand and the notes of the left hand. For each hand, we will associate a note with a number, which will allow you to identify this note to play it on your piano. The diagram below, which we will add for each song so that you can always refer to it, shows each piano key associated with a number:

The numbers go from 1 to 12, as they are categorized by octave. Each octave will be identified by a color code. To play the songs, we will list the numbers one after the other, in different colors. For example, if you have to play the note C in the third octave, we will display the number 1 associated with the green color .

Here are the color codes associated with the octaves:

Octave 0 : pink Octave 7: yellow Octave 8: light green

Example 1: to play the notes C, D and E located in the fourth octave, we will display these numbers with this color: 1 3 5.

Example 2 : to play the notes G, A and B located in the fifth octave, we will display these numbers with this color : 8 10 12.

At the end of each song, we will also show you a tutorial video to learn how to play the piano notes in addition to the numbers we give you. This will give you a visual support to help you learn faster.

Standard Keyboard Layout On A Modern Upright Piano

F sharp is likely the first sharp to be added to the keyboard. A painting by Van Eyck confirms that around 1430 narrower keys were being made than in earlier years, with the use of sharps. Since the mid-thirteenth century, the keyboard hasnt changed except for small differences in the key-width and key coverings.

Digital Piano Weighted Keys

As Bach himself complained about the touch of his keyboards, most pianists today look for a touch that suits them. Acoustic pianos historically have the lightest and most favorable touch, responsive to the players style. Digital pianos, introduced in the 1980s, offered an electronic solution for traveling performers, for piano budgets, small spaces, and convenience. They didnt match the acoustic piano in sound or touch, so improvements kept being made to make digital pianos as close to an acoustic as possible. One of the ways this was done was with weighted keys to provide the right resistance to touch, and are more sensitive to speed, pressure and lightness for a range of soft and loud dynamics.

What Is The Purpose Of Midi

There are at least two options: 1. If your keyboard has a training function, you can use midi files. It is very convenient. 2. If you are learning a piece and cant figure out how a certain part of it should sound, you can listen the file using the screen of your keyboard or a sheet music program. You will be able to see the note that is being played and figure out how to play the piece on your own.

Everything Comes To An End

If you grew up listening to rock and pop songs on the radio like I did, you probably noticed that not all of them came to a resolute ending. In other words, the song continued to repeat and fade out. This is also referred to as a repeat and fade ending.

But you don’t really have this option playing songs at your piano. The repeat and fade is more of a recording technique. Since you’re playing live, you’ll most likely end your songs on a final measure and an ending chord.

Let me also add that if you’re playing from some type of written music, it may suggest a repeat and fade ending. But your song ending can just as interesting as any part of your song. Let’s talk about 3 professional ways to end your song.

If I had to point out the most common ending to a song, it would be the V7 chord resolving to the I chord. In the key of C Major it would be the G7 to C chord.

But you can go beyond that generic ending and with these 3 creative professional sounding endings.

1 Whole Step Ending

The whole step ending is just as described. Your target is the I chord but instead of moving directly from the V chord to get there, the progression takes a detour and moves to the sharp V tone and proceeds to the flatted VII tone. The progression then ends on the I tone. All of these tones in the bass are whole step apart.

Mother Of Pearl Antique Steinway Grand Piano Keyboard

The white keys were once darker with the sharps white, a custom said to have started in France to better show off the players hands. Many and varied materials were used to cover keys including bone, mother-of-pearl, porcelain, tortoise-shell, silver, boxwood, cedar, ebony, pear and other rare and polished woods.

At times the fronts of the naturals were beautifully carved.

In the latter 1700s Viennese keys were most often ivory. Silbermanns keys were very thick ivory. In efforts to make cheap lines of pianos, ivory was replaced with cellulose in 1862, simulating ivory, and has been used on the cheapest pianos since then.

Starting in 1959, acrylic plastic began to be used on keys, and in the sixties an embargo was put on ivory. Different countries making pianos had different standards but by the 1970s ivory in the US was off limits for key coverings.

    Getting Better At Sight Reading

When you start learning to read as a child, you have to concentrate on the meaning of each word, then put it into the context of a sentence. Eventually, you understand each sentence without thinking. Music is the same. It just takes practice.

Find a song that suits your skill level and practice playing it using the sheet music alone. Even if it looks confusing at first, all black marks and symbols on a page, systematically work out what they mean and play them. Then move onto another piece. You will find that you get used to making mental shortcuts, you stop needing to work it out and start to sight read.

Stick to it and eventually you wont see a page of black marks and symbols. You will hear chords, melodies, harmonies, and know what to play without even thinking about it.

One thing I dont know whyIt doesnt even matter how hard you tryKeep that in mind, I designed this rhymeTo explain in due time

Time is a valuable thingWatch it fly by as the pendulum swingsWatch it count down to the end of the dayThe clock ticks life away

Its so unreal, didnt look out belowWatch the time go right out the windowTrying to hold on, but didnt even knowI wasted it all just to watch you go

I kept everything inside and even though I tried, it all fell apartWhat it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when I tried so hard

It doesnt even matterI had to fallIt doesnt even matter

One thing, I dont know whyIt doesnt even matter how hard you tryKeep that in mind, I designed this rhymeTo remind myself how I tried so hard

In spite of the way you were mocking meActing like I was part of your propertyRemembering all the times you fought with meIm surprised it got so far

Things arent the way they were beforeYou wouldnt even recognize me anymoreNot that you knew me back thenBut it all comes back to me in the end
