Despite being published in 1840, the first music score of the Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-Flat minor, Opus 35 shows that Frédéric Chopin had started his work as early as 1838. It is believed that Chopin, a Polish citizen in exile in France at that time, would have composed the piece to express his feelings towards the uprisings and their violent repressions by the Russians happening in his country at that time.

The third movement of the sonata can be heard in countless movies and cartoons. It was also used for the funerals of many celebrities like John F. Kennedy, Winston Churchill, Stalin and Chopin himself. It is so present in popular culture that hearing the first few notes will instantly evoke death and tragedy.

Halloween Theme: What Makes The Music So Scary

The following is excerpted from the Berklee Online course Synthesis, Sampling, and Sound Design in Film Scoring: Electronic and Textural Resources.

The music from the 1978 film Halloween was revolutionary, not just because director John Carpenter also composed the score, but because of Carpenters adventurous use of early synth pads and stabs, which helped him create one of the most powerful and creepiest soundtracks of all time.

The late 1970s were a pivotal time for electronic music in the soundtrack format, and music like this was previously the domain of science fiction, but Carpenter discovered that the new electronic sounds lent themselves well to the horror genre.

Halloween was a low-budget film, which cost around $300,000. There werent enough funds to pay a film composer, let alone an orchestra. Carpenter had studied music as a kid and played in bands. He then booked a studio in LA and connected with Dan Wymanand eventually engineer Alan Howarthto help him realize the soundtrack with synthesizers. The challenge was that they had to record the music without synchronizing it to picture since the technology had not been invented yet. They played and recorded the music to a click and a stopwatch, then matched it up with the film later on the 35 mm mag stock at the film studio. Its amazing, the score works so well and really captures the horribly frightening vibe perfectly.

Moonlight Sonata Ludwig Van Beethoven

Beethoven was a master of composing dark and dreamlike tunes, which is why we couldn’t help but include him twice on our Halloween list. With its slowly spiraling chords accompanied by deep sinking bass, the first movement of the Moonlight Sonata never fails to evoke feelings of sadness and longing. It’s the ideal musical accompaniment for a cold and gloomy night.

What Notes Is The Halloween Theme

There isnt really a set melody for the Halloween theme, so people can get pretty creative with it. Some popular notes people use include the minor second, flat fifth, and flat sixth, which create a spooky, eerie sound. You can also add in some trills and tremolos to create a more ghostly effect.

There is no denying that the haunting piano theme from Halloween is one of the most enduring horror themes. The songs tension is designed to make the listener feel uneasy. Dissonance is a well-known term that refers to a lack of harmony. Im sure its unpleasant, but its very enjoyable. C and F natural rather than C# and F# should be used if you want to shift the right hand key down a half-step. Adding even more gloom is to play the left hand as octaves.

Play Funeral March Of A Marionette Piano Sheet Music

Halloween Theme Song Piano Sheet Music

Funeral March of a Marionette was written in 1872 by Charles Gounod, initially for piano solo, then orchestrated later on in 1879. The piece was first a suite for piano called Comédie Burlesque but Gounod finally decided to shorten it to keep the part that we now know. It tells the story of a marionette who dies in a duel and its funeral procession.

This tune will sound very familiar to the fans of scary and bizarre stories, as it used to be the theme music of Alfred Hitchcock presents. The series was turned into a record of ghost stories later on, still opening with the Funeral March of a Marionette and Alfred Hitchcock words: How do you do, boys and girls. Im delighted to find that you believe in ghosts, too. After all, they believe in you, so it is only common courtesy to return the favour. Spooky!

Follow the master of suspense and horror movies and add a scary piano music sheet to your collection with Funeral March of a Marionette arranged by Tomplay for an easy level.

Play The Theme Of Ghostbusters Piano Sheet Music

The Ghostbusters movie was first released in 1984 and was an instant critical and commercial success. Funny, yet spooky, it is one of the first movies that comes to your mind when you think about Halloween. It originated from Dan Ackroyd, one of the main cast actors, who thought about a scenario that will mix his fascination for the paranormal with old ghost comedies from the 40s. The result became the phenomenon we all know now.

Part of the movies success is due to the main theme song composed by Elmer Bernstein, featuring the famous Who you gonna call? . The song became number one for three weeks on Billboards Hot 100 chart and was nominated for several awards following this.
