How to Play the C Major Chord on Piano and Keyboard

Now that youve seen the notes in the C# chord, we have to talk about fingering. Fingering is an absolutely essential part of playing piano chords! You will save yourself much pain later on if you focus on this in the beginning. If all my students would focus on fingering, they could save themselves so much wasted practice!

The nice thing is that the fingerings for major chords are always the same. Yes, even for the sharp chords! Even though this chord feels different because of the sharps, you will still use the same exact fingering.

Right hand fingering: 1 3 5Left hand fingering: 5 3 1

Dont forget that finger 1 is your thumb, finger 3 your middle finger, and finger 5 your pinky.

Creating Music With C Major Piano Chords & Notes: A Tutorial

Creating music with C major piano chords and notes can be an enjoyable and creative experience. This tutorial will provide an introduction to the basics of playing these chords and notes, and how to create your own melodies.

When playing C major on the piano, the right hand plays the chords while the left hand plays the notes. It is important to understand the notes and chords of C major, as well as the order in which to play them.

The C major scale is composed of the notes C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C, and the chords are C-Dmi-Emin-F-G-Ami-Bdim-C. To play a C major chord, the notes C-E-G must be played. To play a D minor chord, the notes D-F-A must be played. Each of the other chords of the scale have specific notes that must be played in order to create the chord.

When creating music with C major piano chords and notes, it is important to understand the concept of chord progressions. This is a pattern of chords that are played in a particular order. It is important to choose the right chords to create the desired sound.

Once you have chosen your chords, it is time to add melody. The melody should be created by playing the notes of the chords in a certain order. To create a basic melody, start by playing the root note of the chord, followed by the third note, and then the fifth note. This creates a simple melody that can be repeated and varied upon.

What Are Augmented Piano Chords

Like diminished chords, augmented chords are most often used to transition between more stable sounds in rock and pop music. One example of this is the song Crying performed by Roy Orbison, where an augmented chord is used in the prechorus.

Common augmented piano chords include:

  • C augmented . C – E – G#
  • C# augmented . C# – E# – G##
  • D augmented . D – F# – A#
  • D# augmented . D# – F## – A##
  • E augmented . E – G# – B#
  • F augmented . F – A – C#
  • F# augmented . F# – A# – C##
  • G augmented . G – B – D#
  • G# augmented . G# – B# – D##
  • A augmented . A – C# – E#
  • A# augmented . A# – C## – E##
  • B augmented . B – D# – F##

Chord Theory For C# Minor Chord

One of the important aspects of the C#m chord is that it can often be named incorrectly as a Dbm chord.

C# and Db are the same note. But they aren’t interchangeable. Sharps and flats don’t mix.

So if you are playing or writing chords in a key with sharps, you’ll be playing C#m. If you were playing in a key signature with flats, then the chord would be Dbm. However, Dbm is pretty rare to find as Db minor is not an actual key .

C sharp major chord and D flat major chord on the other hand, both exist as keys but the same rule applies for not mixing sharps and flats when it comes to chord titles.

The C sharp minor chord itself is built off of the first, third and fifth notes of the C# minor scale.

Piano Technique: Playing The C Major Scale

Hands are placed one octave apart. Start from lower register and leave yourself enough octaves to go all the way up to the high register on the piano

Fingering is as follows: Right hand places the thumb on middle c, second finger on d, third on e, then 1 again on f, two on g, three on a, four on b, and again one on c. If the second c is your last octave than instead of playing c with the thumb, just finish your last octave with the five.

    What Are Piano Chords

Most simply put, if you play more than one note at a time youve got a chord. So which notes do you play to make what chord? With eighty-eight keys on the piano, that makes an impossible number of combinations for creating piano chords, right? Actually its simpler than that. The piano keyboard is made up of only twelve tones. These tones, called the chromatic scale, repeat as you go up the keyboard. Each white or black key is included in the scale, and is a half step away from the keys next to it. As you go up the keyboard, twelve half steps will bring you right back to where you started in the sequence of tones. When you make a chord, the distance, measured in half steps, between the tones of a chord determines what kind of chord it is.

Chords in modern-day Western music are mostly either a major chord or a minor chord. Ninety-nine percent of all popular music, and almost as much classical music, is built on these two kinds of chords and their variations.

C Major Chord On The Piano Keyboard

Now that weve found the root, lets pick out the rest of the chord. C major is commonly the very first key students begin learning in, because the C major scale uses only the white keys. Lets review that C major scale again.

    C D E F G A B C

Remember how the notes of a scale will always follow the order of the musical alphabet? The white keys of a piano follow this order as well, repeating that seven note A-G musical alphabet over and over again. On the piano it looks like this:

We first pick out the root of the chord we want to play C in this case. We need the root, the third, and the fifth to play the C major chord. Pianists number their fingers from one through five, with your thumb being one and your pinky being five.

To play this chord in your right hand, I strongly recommend using your first finger to play C, your third to play E, and your fifth to play G. Put your thumb on a C, then let the fingers of your right hand each occupy the next four white keys, leaving your 2nd finger on D, your 3rd on E, 4th on F and 5th on G. Push down your 1st, 3rd, and 5th fingers, or every other white key, for the C major chord.

Since your left hand is a mirror image of your right, the opposite will be true of your left hand 1st finger on G, 2nd on F, 3rd on E, 4th on D, and 5th on C. Again, push down your 1st, 3rd, and 5th fingers for the C major chord.

Why Its Good To Know The Different Ways Of Playing A C Chord

The C chord is a key component of many songs. Thats why its one of the first chords you learn when you start playing an instrument. The C major triad is the main chord of the C major scale. This is a very easy scale to play on a piano. It consists of all the white keys starting from C and ending with the C that is one octave up or down.

Lets take a closer look at the C major scale: C , D, E , F, G , A, B. The notes C, E and G sound familiar maybe because they are exactly the notes we play in our C chord. In other words, they form the foundation for this chord, a kind of skeleton. Lets remember this order for now.

Add flavor and color to any of these piano chords by adding one or more tones to your basic root, third, and 5th. The added tones are usually indicated with a number written after the chord symbol. The number means to add that tone in the scale, starting with the root as 1. You might see a 6, 7, 9, 11, or 13. Those numbers always correspond to a note measured that far from the root in the regular major or minor scale. Count the root as one, then go by the scale that begins on the root. One of the most common added tones is a 7th. An easier way to think about 7th chords for now will be that the 7th is an extra minor third on top of the fifth. The C7 chord is spelled C, E, G, B-flat. Sometimes youll see a slightly different variation, written C maj 7. That just means to use a major third instead of a minor third on top of the chord, or C, E, G, B.You can also have a suspension chord, which replaces a tone in the chord with another tone. For example, if you see C sus 4, that number 4 means youll play the 4th tone above the root instead of the 3rd, or C, F, G. F sus 4 would be F, B-flat, C. An F sus 2 chord symbol means play the 2nd tone of the scale instead of the third, or F, G, C.

The C Major Chord: Inversions Fingerings And Chord Progressions

The C major key is perhaps one of, if not the most commonly used key in music. This is due to the fact that in many instruments, including the piano, this key is easier to memorize and more comfortable to play than most other keys. Particularly in the piano, C major consists of exclusively white keys, which allows us to have our fingers to be at the same level, making it very suitable for piano beginners.

    Guitar Chords On Piano Roll

A piano roll is something that people who produce music on their laptop will know all about. The piano roll is a digital representation of the notes of a piano. You can use it in conjunction with a MIDI keyboard or digital piano to record the notes, or you can draw them in yourself.

If you are already good at producing music on your computer, and want to work out what your guitar chords need to look like if youre going to put them into your DAW or production software, you can just work out the notes again.

Using the same method of working out each individual note of the chord, you can then use this as a guideline for drawing those notes into the piano roll, or using a keyboard to record the chords.

A lot of the time, people who will be using the piano roll to create chords will be using simple triads rather than complicated chord progressions, which makes it easier for the digital producers out there.

Some software has become very impressive. For example, with Logic Pro X, you can record your guitar playing, and then ask the software to turn this into MIDI data, which effectively places the notes on the piano roll for you.

Check out the video below for information on how to convert audio to MIDI. Its not always perfect, but the video below shows you how to convert audio to MIDI pretty reliably.

    Turning Guitar Chords Into Piano

It is much easier to take a guitar chord and turn it into a piano chord.

Whether you know all of the guitar chords or you have to do a bit of research, by learning the guitar chords you can learn what notes make the chord. All you need to do is play the corresponding notes on the piano.

Lets take a D chord as our example.

Knowing the notes on the fretboard is the best way to work out a chord. Check out this helpful graphic from Anyone Can Play Guitar

    anyonecanplayguitar.co.uk

If you know the notes of a D chord, you can work out that you are playing an F#, D, A, and D when you strum in this chord position. Want to turn this into a piano chord? All you need to do is to work out where these four notes are and play them in succession. In fact, if you want to play the chord as a triad, all you have to do is play the D, F# and A, and youre there!

This works with any chord on the guitar. Youre effectively just working out the building blocks that make that chord and recreating them.

In reverse, this isnt anywhere near as easy. Perhaps you made the right call learning how to play the guitar first!

Please note that when were discussing these sort of transitions, were discussing standard tuning. If youve delved into alternate guitar tunings, you need to go back to the standard tuning of E-A-D-G-B-E.

What Is A C Major Chord

C Chord Piano – How to Play C Major Chord on Piano

Technically speaking, a major chord contains any variations of the 1st, 3rd, and 5th note of any given major scale. To play a C major chord, we will be using the 1st, 3rd, and 5th note of the C Major scale, which is as follows:

    C D E F G A B C

Like all scales, the C major scale is eight notes in total, starting and ending on the letter its named after. This starting note will hereby be known as the root note for the remainder of this article. This root note will repeat eight notes, or an octave later to end the scale.

Notes for a scale will always start on the root and then go up or down an octave, one note at a time and following the musical alphabet. The musical alphabet is a lot like the regular alphabet, except it only has seven letters that repeat indefinitely.

More on that a little later.

For now, we are working with the C major scale. Take a look at the scale above and you will note that the 1st note is C, the 3rd is E, and the 5th is G. Well call this a triad. And because we are playing a major triad, the chord will sound happy to our ears.

Now that the theory is out of the way, lets figure out how to translate our newly acquired knowledge to the piano keyboard.
