Transpose And Fine Tuning

Yamaha P-115 Digital Piano Review

Like any digital piano, the P115 doesnt need to be tuned, though you can still adjust the pitch of the entire keyboard using either Transpose or Tuning function.

Transpose function will allow you to change the pitch of the entire keyboard in semitone steps. So, for example, you know how to play a song in F major, you can transpose the pitch and play the song in C major without actually learning it in a new key.

If you want to match the pitch of the piano to that of other instruments, you can fine tune the pitch in 0.2Hz steps.

Unfortunately the P-115 doesnt allow you to change the standard Equal Temperament to other tuning systems like Pure Major, Pure Minor, Meantone, etc.

What Is The Yamaha P

The P-115 is a digital piano in Yamahas P line of keyboards. These pianos are both portable, and relatively affordable, making them excellent keyboards for players of all different skill levels and needs.

Yamaha has recently replaced the P-115 with the extremely similar P-125, meaning the P-115 is discontinued by the manufacturer. The P-125 has made a few minor upgrades, but is largely the same keyboard.

That said, the P-115 is an amazing product that has its own advantages over the newer P-125. This article will cover why you should absolutely consider purchasing this keyboard. Its a lightweight, portable digital piano with good built-in speakers and quality sound technology that can be found at very affordable prices.

The Yamaha P115 Instrument Sounds

For the price range, the P115 really excels in terms of the amount of instrument sounds that it offers and also the quality of those sounds.

This model offers 14 different sounds including 3 grand pianos, 3 electric pianos, 3 organs, vibraphone, strings, harpsichord and wood bass. This is a pretty extensive range and all you really need if you want to record or play live.

As well as this, there are 4 different reverb settings Recital Hall, Concert Hall, Chamber and Club. There are also 192 notes of polyphony which is a massive increase on the 64 notes on offer from the P105. Overall, we were really impressed here.

Connectivity

What Are The Down Sides To This Product

Yamaha Digital Piano P 115 for sale
  • Wireless connectivity

The p115 has successfully integrated the app compatibility through midi, however, digital pianos in todays market are able to provide this same feature wirelessly.

The key noise, Yamaha has drastically improved this from its predecessor, when turning the volume completely low it still possible to hear the key noise, which some people might find annoying.

The voice selection is very poor, if you are thinking of a good digital piano, the p115 is a great one, unfortunately, the voice selection is not its strong point as it offers users with the bare minimum when compared to the 500 plus voices the Yamaha DGX bring to the table.

When it comes to functionalities the p115 holds its ground, however, there is so much left on the table in terms of customization and technologies.

Yamaha P115 Digital Piano

Yamaha P115 is a small, affordable digital piano, that replaced its predecessor, the best-selling P105, in 2015. How is P115 different from P105?

First, the P 115 has a higher amount of polyphony polyphony is the number of keys that can be pressed simultaneously.

The higher the polyphony, the closer the sound of a digital piano to the authentic realistic piano sound of an acoustic instrument. If the P105 had 128-key polyphony, then the P115 already has a significant polyphony increase of 192 keys. And this piano sounds really good!

The number of options for the sound of the instrument has also increased.

The connectivity of the P115 to a computer or tablet is much higher than that of the P105. The P115 is the first piano that can be connected to the Digital Piano Controller app. The application has greatly simplified and expanded the possibilities of piano tuning and music recording.

The Portability Of The Yamaha P115

This is one of the things that we really liked about the P115. At only 26lbs it is the perfect weight for transporting to and from venues if you perform live.

We had no trouble taking it to different locations, or moving it to different places in the home either. The general size of the piano is perfect for being portable so if you are looking for a piano that is packed with features and you perform live then this is definitely one to consider.

Hammer Action And Velocity Sensitivity

What differentiates a piano keyboard from other keyboards is the sensitivity of the keyboard to the force with which the key is pressed. So the note will sound louder or weaker depending on how you press the key. Yamaha has several technologies to imitate the Hammer Action of acoustic pianos.

In this case, the system used is the GHS or Graded Hammer Standard and is one of the most prestigious standards. Many consider it superior to Rolands and Casios systems. The GHS is usually on all Yamaha keyboards with a price of under 1000 . There are other superior technologies.

The GHS system supports 4 keystroke levels that are Hard / Medium / Soft / Fixed and the keys have a texture that mimics a real piano. The Hammer Action of the keys is vital for the correct study of the piano. And of course, it has 88 keys like a real piano. It measures 132.6 cm wide, 16.3 cm is high and 29.5 cm deep.

Casio Cdps160 Compact Digital Piano

The CDPS160 is a very nice digital piano that Casio makes. It is rather similar to our Yamaha keyboards in that it also has no LCD screen or an abundance of sound voicings, but it makes up for it with quality weighted keys and well-sampled piano sounds.

This keyboard also has ¼ outs and a MIDI/USB out as well. It has strong built-in speakers and on board reverb and chorus effects. It also is slightly cheaper than the P-125 and is comparable to many P-115s price-wise on the market.

Changing The Touch Sensitivity

Unlike on an acoustic piano, you can decide how sensitive to the touch of your fingers you want your keyboard keys to be.

The Yamaha P-115 keyboard has four different levels of key sensitivity:

  • No sensitivity. In this mode, the volume of all the notes will be constant, regardless of whether you press with a lot of force or not very much. To play in this mode, hold down the two function buttons and press the highest A key on the keyboard.
  • Soft sensitivity. In this mode, the volume that the notes sound will only be slightly affected by how hard or soft you play the keys. To change to this mode, hold down the two function buttons and play the highest A sharp on the keyboard.
  • Medium sensitivity. This is the default setting for your keyboard, where the amount of force you play each note determines how loud or quiet they sound. To return to this mode from another, hold down the two function buttons and press the highest B key.
  • Hard sensitivity. In this mode, even the slightest differences in touch will result in different sounds produced. To enable this mode, hold down the two function buttons and press the highest C key i.e. the highest note on the keyboard.

How To Transpose Your Yamaha P

If you are playing with other musicians, or playing along to pre-recorded music, then you can fine tune the pitch of your Yamaha P-115 keyboard to the nearest 0.2 Hz.

Your keyboard has a default of the A above middle C being 440 Hz.

To raise the pitch by 0.2 Hz, hold down the two function buttons and press the lowest D key of the keyboard. This can be repeated multiple times depending on how much you want to raise the pitch by, up to a limit of 466.8 Hz.

To lower the pitch by 0.2 Hz, hold down the two function buttons and press the lowest C# key of the keyboard. You can press this as many times as you like depending on how many increments of 0.2 Hz you want to lower by, down to a limit of 414.8 Hz.

If you require A to equal 442 Hz, then you can hold down the two function buttons and press the lowest C of the keyboard, as a shortcut to getting there via 0.2 Hz increments.

If you have adjusted a long way, or have lost track of which pitch you have got to, you can easily reset. To reset to the standard A equals 440 Hz, hold down the two function buttons and press the lowest B key of the keyboard.

The Quality Of The Yamaha P115 Built In Speakers

P-115 Digital Piano Overview

A lot of thought has gone into the design of the P115 speakers and it has certainly paid off. It features two 12cm cone speakers along with an additional 2 4cm speakers. The difference that this makes is huge. Both the treble and the bass sound fantastic at all volume levels.

There is no distortion and each note can be clearly heard. Something that makes the P115 really stand out is the Boost feature. This allows you to produce a much cleaner sound which could be really beneficial if you are playing live and dont want to get overshadowed too much by other instruments or vocals.

Can It Be Used In Any Situation

The Yamaha P115 keyboard is one of the most versatile on the market. Well, it is as good for the studio as it is to live. It has enough power in its sound output thanks to the sound boost so that you can connect it to high-powered sound equipment without the need for a preamp. It is got a lot on it.

It is a piano keyboard at a very affordable price, making it a perfect choice for conservatory study at all levels if you do not have a wall-mounted piano.

Of course, he wears headphones so that he can study at home without disturbing the neighbors. It has a double headphones output and the possibility of dividing the keyboard into two so that teachers and students can study on the same keyboard. The Yamaha P-115 is undoubtedly the most popular choice among professionals and students who want a piano keyboard battle.

In addition to its weight of 11.8 Kg is a fully portable keyboard with a backpack keyboard with handles.

The Overall Design Of The Yamaha P115

The P115 is very much what you would expect from a portable digital piano in terms of design. It is plenty compact enough to be placed on a table or a desk, but would be better if placed on a dedicated stand. This particular model doesnt actually come with a stand which is a shame, but there are plenty available online that would be suitable. One of the things that really impressed us with this model is the buttons along the top of the keyboard.

There are several buttons which allow you to really customize the sound and volume, along with access all of the other features. Its not a beginner piano by a long shot this one has definitely been designed with intermediate players in mind. The keys are very nice to the touch and feel quite realistic as opposed to plastic. The overall design is really nice, especially for a rather affordable digital piano.
