Canon In D Piano Tutorial
In todays episode, were going to do a Canon in D piano tutorial, also known as That Wedding Song. Its one of those classical pieces that almost everyone knows, but a lot of people dont know much about this tune other than that its used at weddings a lot.
So what were going to do in todays episode is talk about the history of this piece, Ill play through the arrangement , and then well talk about little theory things and interpretation ideas.
Lets get started!
Johann Pachelbel : Canon In D
Pachelbel’s Canon is a very famous work which you will hear in various places, either in its original form or in various arrangements. It is very popular at Weddings and the melody, bass or chord sequence have been borrowed for songs, e.g. the melody in Coolio’s “C U When U Get There” and the chords in “All Together Now” by The Farm, while “Memories” by Maroon 5 uses the chords and a small fragment of melody. This video on shows those Pop Song connections in more detail. The original piece is part of Pachelbel’s “Canon and Gigue in D” for 3 violins and Basso Continuo. This piano arrangement is a shortened and simplified version of the “Canon” part of this work, and below you will see the sheet music and a video of this piece. And here is an alternative video showing a piano roll animation of Pachelbel’s Canon. On mfiles we also have the original version, an arrangement for violin and piano, andan arrangementfor four SATB recorders meaning Soprano , Alto, Tenor and Bass Recorders. All of these versions include score and parts, and audio files.
Harmonizing Melodies With Chord Inversions
Another trick you learn from this arrangement is creating harmonies by simply using chord inversions.
About 99% of great melodies make use of chord tones.
Therefore, if you understand what are chord tones, you can easily harmonize them with chord inversions.
Interestingly, you can see this happen all the time in this Canon in D piano tutorial.
For example, a basic triad has a root, a 3rd, and a 5th.
In the last portion of Canon in D , you can see that the melody note is the 3rd of a D major chord .
And so if you know that F# belongs to D major, all you have to do is play D and A underneath it to effectively harmonize it.
Guess what: By doing so, you have just played a 2nd inversion D major chord.
To start getting into the habit of knowing how to harmonize melodies with chord inversions, practice your chord inversions first.
Practice your chord inversions as block chords first and then as arpeggios.
Start working on this using triads. Heres an example of a D major chord in its root position and inversions:
D major Root position
D major 1st inversion
D major 2nd inversion
Once you are able to do this, work on all the 4 basic triads first.
After that, work on 7th chords, chords with extensions, and various chord voicings.
This will help you master how to harmonize melodies.

How The Sauce Was Made

I’m a GNU Lilypond guy as well as a libre culture advocate, so I waspleased to discover that the nice folks atMutopiahad already typeset a standard score in a very extensible Lilypondproject released under a free license. I’m indebted to them. In spiteof this legacy, it took several weeks of manual adjustments to come upwith a transcription I would deem worthy of sharing.
For one, the four-part score had to be merged in the two-staff kind ofsystem pianists are familiar with. In the absence of a trustworthypiano transcription I first learned to play Canon from a full score, presuming that it would be more cost-effective than making thetranscription. I was wrong, and the ensuing boondoggle is whatmotivated me to sign up for this task. I don’t recommend reading fromthe ensemble score to any performer of solo polyphonic instruments, except for analysis, or as an exercise for improving your cephalopodancraft of decoupling fingers from hands, also known as voicing. Voicesconverge every now and then, just to jump afterwards from register toregister more often than not, making the reading of staves which don’trespond to these changes tantamount to untying a really messed-upknot. This is illustrated in Figure 1, an excerptcorresponding to bar 36.
Problematic notes are therefore roughly dealt with according to thefollowing heuristics:

Is Canon In D Written For The Piano
Many classical composers, like Beethoven, wrote pieces for just the piano or harpsichord. However, in the baroque period, string quartets were a big deal. So, is Canon in D originally a piano piece, or did modern musicians adapt it for the piano?
The original Canon in D composition notes that this piece is for three violins and basso continuo. The Italian term basso continuo does not refer to a stringed bass instrument.
A basso continuo usually includes a stringed instrument with deep notes, such as a cello or bassoon. These instruments work in tandem with a harpsichord, lute, or organ.
The piano is the updated version of a harpsichord. So, yes, Canon in D was written for the piano in combination with strings.
Take A Sneak Peek Of Our Lesson
Johann Pachelbel was a composer from the Baroque period of classical music, who lived from 1653-1706. He wrote many pieces but none have achieved the type of international fame as his Canon in D.
This seemingly simple wedding march has an iconic bass-line and chord progression that has been repurposed into hundreds of contemporary pop songs, even famously in a 2020 hit by Maroon 5, Memories.

Pick Your Melody For Canon In D
Ive gone ahead and picked 3 of the most popular melodies from Canon in D that you can start with. Each one will contain faster note values than the last. The first two are pretty accessible for any beginner play. The last one is a bit more challenging, but also one of the most recognizable melodies in the piece.
You will probably notice that as the note values get faster and faster, the energy also increases. Since each of these melodies seems to contain one primary note value, we can think of it as a pulse. The first contains a half note pulse, the second a quarter note pulse, and the third a 16th note pulse. As the pulse speed increases, so does the energy.
