Get Familiar With Your Instrument
Now that you have your piano or keyboard, spend some time getting familiar with it.
To accomplish this task:
Listen to your new piano. Is it in tune? You might consider having someone tune it for you for the first time. If you went with a keyboard, you can skip this step.
Learn about the keys and their names. If your piano came with a book or you chose to buy one, the keys should be in the piano book. If not, this 5-minute tutorial will walk you through an easy way to learn the keys.
Make sure you understand what proper hand posture looks like. Really listen to each of them, and note how they are different from the others. Keep practicing until you can tell the difference between them. You want to form good habits from the beginning!
Practice Mistake : Failing To Revise Pieces To Maintain A Repertoire
Having made the above point that just playing through material you already know and can play easily can be a cop-out that is not really piano practice, the opposite is just as common for some students.
It may surprise you to know that many students, once they have learned a piece, are disinclined to ever play / practice it again, instead preferring to always push ahead to the next new piece.
This addiction to completing lessons / levels is, for some students, part of the appeal of Musiah online piano lessons.
But it can lead to a scenario where students are unable to play anything for family / friends / visitors because the student has not yet finished the piece they are currently learning, and they have forgotten much of the pieces they have learned recently because they have not made a point of going over them occasionally to maintain a repertoire of say 5 songs they can play upon demand. So there is a balance to be reached here.
At least once a week, allocate some time for refreshing your memory by revising some of the pieces you have already learned not so you can get out of practicing / learning something new, but for the specific purpose of maintaining a repertoire that will enable you to share what you have learned with others.

I Want To Tackle Classical
A good teacher wont just direct you blindly through a book, though instructors did mention that Fabers Adult Piano Adventures series contains beginner pieces that are less grating than Hot Cross Buns. Instead, a teacher should offer you pieces to play that are achievable at your level, like an easier arrangement of a Chopin nocturne, which was the first classical piece that Bell was able to master. Ono likes giving his students classical pieces by contemporary composers to keep things interesting he likes, in particular, Lera Auerbach, Kevin Olson, and William Gillock. Your teacher may even compose some music just for you. Ihave written stuff for my students, Ono says. Usually, its just that I know what they need to work on technical or musical challenges such as phrasing, hand independence, or incorporating the pedal, for example and I scour what Ican find for the thing. If I cant find it, well, then, okay, Ill just write a piece.
One Great Teacher: Arielle Levioff, 92YLevioff has appeared as a soloist at Carnegie Halls Stern Auditorium and Weill Recital Hall as well as Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. According to Bell, shes patient and gives good feedback. She also teaches older adults through 92Ys Himan Brown 60+ Program.
I Want To Retackle The Classical Music I Knew As A 16

Youll probably begin by playing a piece of classical music for an instructor as an ability test something from one of your old books or repertoire that youre still able to play is fine. Idont need to hear more than four measures to get an idea of how they approach the instrument and what theyre capable of, Yedidia says. What you do next will depend on whether you were on a preprofessional track, how good you were to begin with, and how long ago you quit.
Although people who have had formal piano training almost always learn faster than beginners, returning students can face some specific challenges. They may have to unlearn bad habits . Or they might have bad memories of their early lessons of being forced to practice, or of having their fingers smacked with a ruler for making mistakes.
One Great Teacher: Ronn Yedidia,New York Piano AcademyYedidia is particularly adept at figuring out where people are on their musical journey and what to do next. I try to pick up all the musical and technical pieces which exist in that person whatever is still in memory as well as any other potential and amalgamate them to the best of my and his or her ability.

What Do You Want To Learn
Focusing on a single goal will get you further than trying to tackle Chopins nocturnes and Bill Evanss Autumn Leaves all at once. For any of the following objectives or to learn a single song, for that matter youll have to first grasp the basics: where to put your fingers, how to read notes on a music staff, and the names of the individual piano keys.

The Three Legs Of The Stool Of Learning To Play Piano
1. The IntellectualThe intellectual leg of the stool refers to facts about piano playing such as how many notes there are in music, the pattern of a Major scale, what the intervals are in a chord, etc. These are simply facts that you understand on a cognitive level.2. The AuralThe aural leg refers to your sense of hearing. This isnt necessarily play by ear which I covered earlier, but would tie into it. What the aural leg refers to is hearing what your playing and recognizing the variations of the sounds. If you play a Major chord, it will sound one way, a minor chord sounds different, a diminished chord will sound more different than both of these. One of the most important aspects of the aural leg is hearing when you play a wrong note. This comes very naturally and your ears are a lot smarter than you realize.3. The kinestheticThe kinesthetic leg is one in which most piano instructors dont discuss because theyre not aware of it . This is probably the most fascinating aspect of piano playing because of how it relates to everything else that we physically do.
A good example of kinesthetic sense can be taught to us by a mouse. Mice seek to find food sources in a familiar environment so they can easily commute. But theyre not able to do it very well visually.
Mice have poor vision and cant see farther than about 20 feet in front of their face. Theyre also color blind and to make things more difficult for them, they cant see sharp images.

The Challenges Of Teaching Yourself
It all depends on the student. If youre completely new to piano, its probably not a good idea to teach yourself. While you dont need a degree in music theory or years of experience in school orchestras to teach yourself to play the piano, you do need a lot of patience and the ability to practice very consistently and be disciplined about your goals.
If youre a piano student beginner, its best to start with scales and chords and progress from there. For technical training, you can turn to books or online courses, but most students find it easier to start with private lessons with a music teacher who knows exactly what to expect next.
