What Are Sharps & Flats
Sharps and flats are the half tones in a traditional Western scale. A sharp is a half step higher than the natural tone, and a flat is a half step lower than the natural tone. Because of this, youll find some overlap in how specific tones are labeled. For example, an A# will also be a Bb, because its a half tone above an A natural, but also a half tone below a B natural.
It can be tempting to think of sharps and flats as the black keys on the piano. However, there are sharps and flats that are represented by white keys, too. For example, an E# is also an F natural, which is a white key. And a Cb is also a B natural, which is a white key.
The sharp sign looks like this:
A flat sign looks like this:

Piano Music Notes For Beginners
Learning the piano isnt so bad when you know the basics of reading notes. In this short article, we walk you through the basics of piano notes for beginners.
When you see sheet music for the first time, it could look like some kind of cave-man script from another eon. For the beginner, this can be very unsettling.
We got you. Lets begin by walking through the fundamentals of all you need to know to start reading music notes and playing them on piano.
Music is a language of sound.
When an instrument produces a sound, that sound vibrates at a particular frequency or pitch.
In Western music, we use twelve specific frequencies, called notes. These twelve frequencies repeat themselves across high and low registers of pitch.
In other words, we call the frequency of a sound pitch and organize them in a system of symbols we call notes.
We use letters from A to G to name seven of the twelve notes and use sharps and flats for the remaining five. The symbol sharp means slightly higher than the note its in front of, and flat meansslightly lower.
Flat and sharp notes have two names, depending on the context. In the end, it looks something like this:
You can write and read all of these notes on a visual structure called a staff.

But with beginner piano music, always at least one FUN piece, a piece that gives the child something to look forward to at practice time.
Keep looking until you find a piece they enjoy, and they will likely work on it happily until it is perfect.
So where do you find that perfect piece? It’s so easy to make a wrong choice for a picky student!
And there’s the nagging little voice in the back of your mind reminding you that copying is definitely not legal…

The Pros Of Writing Down The Note Letters
The definite advantage of writing down the note letters is that it makes more difficult songs playable when youre a beginner. Intermediate and advanced songs sound awesome and impressive, but when your sight reading skills arent there yet, the dense clusters of notes can be impenetrable. You might be able to struggle through something once or twice, but its difficult to retain.
I see this often, actually, and its something I have encountered myself. If a song is too difficult, reading it will feel like agony. It will be extremely slow going, and it wont come together nicely.
If you give it time, though, and let your reading and playing skills develop, you might come back to that same song a year later and suddenly its totally doable.
OR you can write down the note letters, or use some other form of sheet music simplifying that allows you to bypass the actual reading of notes.
Ultimately, that is a pro being able to play songs beyond your level is definitely a decent reason to write in the letters.

Finding A Middle Ground
Something that Id include in the pro column is the idea of writing down a few of the notes. It can be a great advantage to mark down the opening letters, and maybe some wild ones that are difficult to figure out on the spot.
Right from a beginner level, I do this with my students. We always look closely at the first notes, and what fingers play those first notes. After that, we generally only write in a letter here or there.
This, to me, is the best of both worlds it can simplify things a ton just by writing in a couple letters, but it doesnt get in the way of learning to read music. Writing down a few notes is less of a crutch, and more of an enhancement think of it like salt. A little salt can make the whole meal go down better, but too much salt is rough on your body.

What Are Time Signatures
Sheet music is divided into measures, which are broken up by bar lines. Each measure contains a specific number of beats. The time signature tells you how many beats are contained in every measure. Every time signature has two numbers, stacked one on top of another. The top note signifies the number of beats contained in each measure. The bottom number signifies what kind of note is considered one beat, or in other words, what kind of note is given full value.
There are all kinds of different time signatures, but the most common are 4/4 , 3/4, 6/8, and 2/2.
The Mental Flip Strategy: Reading Piano Notes For Beginners
You must flip the orientation of the sheet music in front of you mentally, so you can read the vertical orientation of the notes.
In order to begin to think about and practice this mental flip, there is an extremely helpful strategy you can use. You can actually turn the sheet music so you are reading the notes down the page. Doing so allows you to more easily understand the spacing between the notes and more intuitively grasp where your fingers should be placed on the keys. This technique is also helpful for visualizing the grand staff as a whole and where the octaves on the keyboard are located.

Understanding The Treble Staff
Unlike most instruments, pianists have the tough task of reading two different music staffs. Together they create the grand staff, however, they contain both the treble and bass clefs.
The treble clef is often referred to as the G clef. The bottom line of the staff is E, and each line after that represents a skipped note. For example, the bottom line is E, the second line is G, the third line is B and so forth. The top line is F.
The spaces of the treble staff also are separated by skips. The first space is F, followed by A, C, and E.
One way to memorize the notes on the treble staff is to use the saying Every Good Boy Does Fine. The first letter of each word represents the order of notes on the lines. For the spaces simply remember the word FACE.
The location of the notes on the treble staff is anywhere from middle C and upward. Middle C is the fourth C on the piano, usually where the brand logo appears.
Characteristics of notes in the treble staff are higher pitched compared to the bass staff. Most melodies you find in sheet music whether its Classical or Pop originate in this area.
While the right hand predominantly plays in the treble staff, there are occasions where the hands can switch roles. This includes hand crossing and occasionally playing pieces up or down an octave from their original location.
