Air On The G String Piano Arrangement

Bach – Air on the G String – Piano Tutorial & Sheet Music

The piece is the second movement of five from Bachs Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major . The movements are Overture, Air, Gavottes I and II, Bourrée and Gigue. This arrangement for easy piano is in C major, has a slow tempo and has a fairly simple right hand part as a result, it should be accessible for most pianists who have been learning the instrument for a period of time.

There are some trills which need to be played and so an understanding of what these are and how they should be tackled will be helpful. It may be helpful to look at the lesson on ornamentation, which covers trills. The left hand of the piano plays a walking bass line which is a characteristic of the Baroque period. Careful attention will need to be given to the fingering in this left hand part to be able to play the line smoothly and with shape. The 5th finger and the thumb will need to be used repeatedly for the octave leaps.

Analysis Of Air On The G

In Johann Sebastian Bachs original score the Air is played on the strings and continuo without the other orchestral instruments included in other movements . It is surprisingly short for a piece of such high standing in the Western Classical tradition it is only 36 bars in length!

The name Air on the G String derives from the fact that the piece can be played entirely on the G string of a violin when it is played in C major. This makes it an excellent piece for trainee violinists to learn. The name was first used by August Wilhelmj in 1871 when he arranged the piece in C major . The structure is binary form. There is an A section lasting 12 bars followed by a B section of 24 bars.

Tune Of The Day: Air On The G String

Air on the G String by J S Bach arranged for Piano Solo

Johann Sebastian Bach composed his Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068, for his patron Prince Leopold of Anhalt sometime between the years 1717 and 1723.

The name Air on the G String comes from violinist August Wilhelmj’s late 19th-century arrangement of the piece for violin and piano. By transposing the key of the piece from its original D major to C major and transposing the melody down an octave, Wilhelmj was able to play the piece on only one string of his violin, the G string. The name Air on the G String, however, has today more or less taken the meaning of any arrangement of Bach’s Air.

Tips For Playing Level 5 Air On The G String:

This Level 5 arrangement of “Air on the G String” is at an advanced level. It’s written in the original key of D major that Bach wrote . We should say it is an adaptation for piano solo more so than arrangement because it has 99% the same as the original exception of a few notes removed such as duplicated notes. The left hand basically plays the bass notes played by the contra-bass players. All other 3 string parts are played by the right hand. It is advanced because you do need to play 3 lines by one hand even though it sounds easy. Some notes are required to be held longer while the other finger needs to play shorter beats with the right hand alone frequently. Appreciation Of Wilhelmj’s Arrangement

Air On A G String Sheet Music by Johann Sebastian Bach
This section needs expansion. You can help by adding to it.

In the early 20th century, Joseph Joachim called Wilhelmj’s arrangement “a shameless falsification of a work by Bach”.

The “Air”, exclusively for strings and continuo, with its perfect singing in all voices, breathing an unsurpassed “lost to the world”, has suffered the most appalling regicide in music: the violinist Wilhelmj converted it to sultry claptrap by setting it as “Aria on the G String”, thus vandalising and annihilating both its equilibrated polyphony and delicate atmosphere.

    âX-Y-Z der muziek âtranslation

British musicologist Donald Francis Tovey likewise criticized Wihelmj’s arrangement, stating that “At my concerts will be heard as Bach wrote it, in its original D major as an angelic soprano strain, not in C major as a display of contralto depths.”
